What services do you offer?

Hillside Product Design can offer anything from individual services – e.g. feasibility studies, prototyping, or debugging; support for in-house design teams including project infill during peak periods or short staffing; up to turn-key product solutions for companies with no NPD capabilities of their own. We can even help to increase manufacturing efficiency with custom jigs and fixtures. Click here to view a breakdown of our services.

How much will it cost?

Design costs of a project from first sketch to sign off of production samples vary widely as they are dependent on the complexity of the design brief. Design costs are typically one of the smaller costs of bringing a product to market. Tooling costs also vary dependant on the size, number and complexity of components. An effective marketing campaign could be the largest cost in launching a new product. We can help you to understand the cost implications and feasibility of a project. Contact us to find out how.

Can I get funding?

Funding and tax relief could be available whether you are an individual with an idea or an established business. The government and its associated bodies are very keen to promote innovation and product development and there are various funding opportunities out there to consider, as well as tax relief schemes for fledgling companies. Read more on possible funding opportunities and how to access them here.

How long will it take?

A typical product development process can take anywhere between 3 and 9 months, yet some can be fast tracked in a matter of weeks. This is of course dependant on complexity and breadth of research and development, manufacturers’ lead-times, production of tooling, and certification. To find out more, why not arrange a call-back? How much experience do you have?

Hillside Product Design's collective experience spans almost 50 years of product design consultancy and design for manufacture. We’ve been involved in upwards of 2,000 projects in that time, and the individual custom component count is probably several thousand but no one is counting as it increases by the week! Is there anything I need to do before approaching you?

Do everything you can to understand your market and your prospective customers. The more information you can provide at the start of the project, the more efficient the project process will be for you. Explore your options for financing your project and plan how you will gain a foothold into your market. Having a new product is one thing; putting it on shelves in shops is another. These are the real costs to plan for before initiating the process. Our Information Pack contains a lot of useful information to help you prepare for your project. Click here to get your copy.

I am new to this – is that a problem?

Hillside Product Design have the knowledge and experience to guide you through the process, helping you to avoid the many pitfalls which commonly scupper new product development projects. All we ask is that you come into the process ready to open a dialogue and share your expertise about your idea and the market.

Can I protect my idea?

If you have a novel idea that nobody else has thought of, there are a number of different types of protection for Intellectual Property (IP). We have excellent links with trusted and experienced IP attorneys in several specialisms, who can help you gain the right protection. A DIY patent is not the best approach and can do more harm than good. It is important to seek expert legal advice!
