Cast your minds back and you might recall my article detailing my first year at HPDL. Now I’ve completed a second and it’s been another incredible year!
Two years in the job has meant I have been able to see projects come full circle from the seed of an idea when I first started to handling the first mouldings and best of all, seeing some of these products now available to buy in the marketplace. It is very satisfying to apply the knowledge that I have been gaining throughout my work experience to the new and varying projects that I have been taking on.
Looking back to the start of my design career I have gained more confidence in my abilities as a product designer. This is not just my core abilities but also my management of projects. This extends from discussing with a client what is important with the design and then also talking to manufacturers about what is necessary. I have learnt that creating a balance between these two factors is what makes good design.
At Hillside I spend my days surrounded by people who have a very similar mindset to myself; we all love a challenge and being able to find solutions to any problems that arise. These challenges can be as simple as designing a small modification to an existing product in order to make sure they stay relevant for longer. Or designing an entirely new product from the ground up. At Hillside no two days are ever the same and that’s the best bit about my job. Who knows what stories I will have to tell in another year’s time. One thing I do know is that 2020 will undoubtedly be another exciting year!
