Greg Carlson a Senior Designer at Hillside Product Design recently took part in the beach clean at Teignmouth ‘back beach’. It was all part of The Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) beach clean that covered a record-breaking 231 locations across the UK with 8,000 volunteers. In total 35 tonnes of marine litter was removed, of which 10 tonnes went on to be recycled. It was the biggest beach clean to date.
Greg (pictured on far left), attended the beach clean with friends and other volunteers.
“I spent pretty much my entire childhood having fun on the beaches around here”, Greg said and continued. “Whether it was swimming, rowing my boat or fishing I have always spent many hours enjoying the environment. This year will be no exception as I intend to make the most of the beach, especially as the weather improves”.
“So when I heard about the beach clean I was keen to get involved. A couple of hours with friends to help out and raise awareness was an enjoyable Sunday afternoon activity”.
Giving back
Recalling an unfortunate childhood injury, Greg said “When I was young I was unlucky enough to stand on some beach litter and badly cut my foot. Among the many and various types of rubbish we picked, this year the thing I noticed most was the amount of broken glass. This poses an immediate direct risk of injury to everyone on the beach, especially to children and dogs. I was happy to be able to safely remove as much of it as possible during our time on the beach.”
Greg concluded by saying “As an individual it’s a small gesture, but as more and more people get involved to remove litter and help and raise awareness positive results are being achieved. The coastline is our place, which is part of our planet so it’s all our responsibility”.
