A day in the life of a Product Designer may not be quite as one would first imagine!
Typically Product Designers work in a clean and bright studio. They use drawings, 3D models and CAD to develop ideas and projects. There will be a workshop on site and areas set aside where meetings can be held without disturbing the creative process. Whilst developing a project they may spend some time off site in factories where tooling and manufacturing takes place, often these may be noisy, dusty or dirty but nonetheless an important part of the role.
But this isn’t all.
In order to create a desirable and effective product which addresses the key factors of performance, reliability, cost and aesthetics sometimes other steps are required.
This winter one of our design teams with their usual vigour and enthusiasm went the extra mile – out to sea in fact! Our studio being located in Teignmouth, Devon this exercise was simple enough to organise, but would you do it?
One by one they experienced personally what it is like to fall off a boat into the sea – in freezing cold temperatures! Why you may ask? Because it is vital that our product designers experience the problems they need to address at first hand.
Towels, blankets and steaming flasks of hot chocolate were handed out before heading back to the warmth of the studio to recall the experience while it was still fresh in their minds!
