Design Without Compromise

The considerations which make for a great end product

SHARING:

Design and manufacture commonly go hand in hand; good design will normally lead to fast and reliable production and good manufacturing will, in the main create a great product. However, this isn’t always the case.

At the conceptual stage it can sometimes be difficult to choose between two firm favourites – a dilemma which can be difficult to quantify. One of them may be superior in terms of practicality but expensive to manufacture whereas the second may be less durable but more cost effective to produce.

In essence this becomes a choice between: compromising the finished product, and having to price the intended product out of the market. But this needn’t be the case. Potentially a lot of time, effort and money can be saved when taking a product to a manufacturer and compromises kept to the minimum, when processes such as tooling and packaging are considered at the very onset of the design stage.

Designing with manufacture in mind is beneficial when approaching tool makers and factories for production. Product Design which considers manufacturing at the onset leads to less chance of misinterpretation and production errors.

Viewing manufacturing as a means to turn ideas, innovations and products into reality is key to creating great design. The two go hand in hand.
