Hillside Product Design is based at the heart of the small seaside town of Teignmouth, a place perhaps more commonly associated with seashells and fish n’ chips than with global digital enterprise. However, Hillside Product Design has been able to build a very successful business with international reach from this quiet location thanks to its access to excellent broadband and a total embrace of digital working practices.
Only last week, we were presented with the silver award for Digital Business of the Year at the glittering and prestigious South Devon Business Awards ceremony. Undoubtedly, one of the key ingredients to our far reaching success is down to our fortunate position of having secured fast broadband in our operations.
Digital tools and practices are very much at the centre of our design and engineering activities. We use the latest CAD software to develop 3D models and their specifications as electronic files which are distributed to a global network of suppliers. We use video conferencing software, send information backwards and forwards almost instantaneously and make ‘live’ modifications to 3D models whilst sharing screens. With many of our manufacturing suppliers and clients based overseas we are to perform at a world class level.
Today, we can have a design prepared, issued and in the hands of the manufacturer, often on the other side of the globe, in a matter of hours where once this process might have taken weeks using analogue methods. We can achieve this because we have access to excellent broadband but there are many businesses in the South West who are still being hamstrung by inadequate broadband. These businesses will sadly never reach their potential until broadband providers provide a better service.
We may be able to celebrate our digital success bringing business to South Devon from all over the UK and as far away as the United States to west and China to the east, but for others in the South West, prosperity is being unfairly held back by their poor access to broadband and that is unacceptable.
