At some stage or another many of us will have an idea for a great product; a product which we believe could be very successful.
Seeing a product develop from embryonic beginnings to a finished product ready for distribution can be a very rewarding experience. However, the road to success can be a bumpy ride and many companies and entrepreneurs will struggle, or even fail, to develop a new product without seeking knowledge and assistance from a product design consultancy.
Your idea may have great promise, but does it tick all of the boxes to become commercially viable or successful? This is the first critical step on a long winding road and will give you a good indication of whether it is worth soldiering on or not.
The whole process from initial concept to a marketplace-ready product can be a lengthy and costly process. Development, manufacture and distribution will probably require substantial financial investment. The question that needs to be asked at this stage of the process is - How are the necessary funds going to be raised?
Once you have established enough funding or investment for your viable product, it is a really good idea before proceeding any further to protect your idea. There is no point having a great product if a copycat competitor steals your market advantage! It is advisable to do a comprehensive search and ask around to find out what type of intellectual property protection is most suitable.
Then the fun really starts to happen – taking your rough sketch and seeing it being transformed into a physical product rolling off the production line is a great feeling. However, it does take time - concept sketches, prototyping and rounds of relevant testing, before producing 3D files ready for manufacturing. It all needs to be done and there are plenty of elements to consider on the journey to developing a product.
Then the final hurdle - selling your product. What are your plans for distribution? How will your product be packaged? Who are your customers? What is your recommended retail price? How are you going to get a good return on your investment?
