Ball Puzzle

CLIENT: Toys & Games Manufacturer

INDUSTRY: Toys & Games

This puzzle features four rings of coloured plastic balls. The rings are paired and each pair are arranged so they intersect like the links of a chain. The balls sit inside sprockets which ensure they stay in the rings. The purpose of the game is to swap the balls from one ring to the other by feeding and taking the balls to and from the intersection point. This sounds simple enough until you add two levels of skill to test the user. The user can permanently lock either or both pairs of sprockets but once locked they cannot be released.

The task was to develop the puzzle theme to a series of concept designs. Each concept had to have a clearly defined inspiration which would become a part of the marketing for the final product. Three concepts were presented as CAD generated models and images. The Seashells and Pearls theme was developed into a fully working prototype and this was play tested. The styling was altered to reflect the feedback and the components were finalised and CAD data issued.
