Heated Spa Stand

Heated Spa Stand - Image 1

CLIENT: Spa & Therapy Treatment Supplier

INDUSTRY: Spa & Therapy

The client is regarded as a major innovator in the spa and therapy treatment industry. They invented a water displacement massage system which uses water filled cushions supporting the person having the treatment.

The client was looking for a design agency to develop a heated stand on which a spare set of cushions could be heated between treatments. The heated stand would be a prominent feature in the treatment room and would be used in exclusive health clubs and spas.

The initial task was to prepare mood boards to help focus thinking on the product, the user, the work environment and a montage of different product builds, materials and finishes. The concept of a horizontal heater matrix was quickly identified and several heater cartridge and radiator building companies approached to resolve technical questions.

A sketchbook of ideas was prepared and this was shortlisted to three concepts. These were developed by CAD in 3D showing general views and user features from which the client chose one concept. A working prototype was built to prove the heating aspect of the design. The developed concept featured toughened glass panels joined by metal clamps supporting a fluid filled radiator module and sheet metal side wings.

The project also included the design of the shipping crate and liaising with shipping agents to determine handling requirements. A significant amount of time was needed to resolve issues of approvals because the unit would be supplied to the USA and Europe. The components and assemblies were finalised and manufacturing drawings for each component were prepared on CAD.
