Hillside Product Design was approached by an engineer developing a totally new material with unique optical qualities which he hoped could find applications in the fashion industry, particularly for use in items such as watches, jewellery and eyewear. He required some example parts machined from this material in order to present it to potential clients and interested parties.
Due to its experimental status and extreme cost and rarity, there was only a very limited supply of material with which to work and only enough to get it right first time. As this material was completely new and had never been machined before a programme of test cuts were made to learn its characteristics before committing to any final cutting. Among the parts machined were a ring, a watch face, watch body and a cog which allowed a small set of jewellery to be produced.
