The client is a world leader in the field of automated traffic data collection. The brief was to design an IP66 sealed enclosure to house the client's own electronics. The enclosure would be used at the roadside to gather real time data about traffic flow and Vehicle by Vehicle data including count, speed, length, lane occupancy and many other factors crucial to road planning.
Due to the remote location of many road survey sites the unit had to incorporate a substantial battery with a capacity for eight weeks operation. The client asked for a carrying handle which would allow the installer to carry up to two units at a time in one hand leaving the other hand for a toolkit.
The design was initially developed from sketches and foam block models. In later stages rapid prototype enclosures were used to evaluate sealing and assembly. The IP testing was done in house. The project required close collaboration with the client's own engineers prior to commissioning all tooling from 3D data and 2D control drawings.
