Hillside Product Design was commissioned to design a handheld electronic tag detector for use in retail warehouses to check that all goods leaving one warehouse for another warehouse are cleared of all shop floor RFID tags. The product needed to be capable of being swept through racks of clothing as quickly and comfortably as possible so as not to delay vehicle loading.
The client had a series of 2D concept sketches based on a prototype PCB and coil which had been shown to work well. We began with an ergonomic study and block models to develop a universal hand grip and balance for a large range of users. This was further developed into a fully working prototype. Parts were manufactured from CAD data and control drawings with full support for the toolmakers up to signing off.
