The client was a large exhibition designer with a commission to install a permanent exhibition called Vikingar detailing the history and the conquests of the Vikings. The exhibition is situated in Largs and was conceived as a journey through time from the early Viking raids to their defeat at the Battle of Largs in 1263.
In the language of the Vikings, Vikingar meant “men who go raiding in boats” but it was not the purpose of the display to dwell on this aspect. Vikings were also farmers, traders, colonizers, and the first European explorers of the North Atlantic.
The brief was to research, design and build and install an interactive wall map detailing the Viking World around C1200. Viewers could activate buttons to show ‘secret until lit’ details of trade routes, colonization, trades and activities. This was achieved using custom designed fibre optics and LED light clusters. The map was constructed in relief using resin over wood and finished with a bronze pigment. The bronze appeared opaque until illuminated from behind.
