Waste Compactor

The client is an entrepreneur with a keen interest in gardening and recycling. The client works as a landscape gardener and had experienced first-hand the problems of disposing of cuttings. The client had conceived of a portable hand operated baler which would compress loose cuttings into dense bales which would be more compact and easier to handle. 

The client was looking for a designer who could develop the concept as a product for those with large gardens and as a short term hire product. This work would later expand to preparing marketing media. 

The first stage was to undertake an ergonomic study and prepare concept designs incorporating its finding. Concept designs were prepared as sketches and developed using CAD. The shortlisted design was built as a working test rig and field tested for several weeks. Video footage of the field testing was combined with animations of the product into a product show reel.
