The client is a major name in the toy industry with a well known range of action games. The clients in house new products team had brainstormed a new version of a 'throw off' toy which they would like to play test. The design was for a battery powered pelican which rotated on a base and opened and closed it beak as it went round. The object of the game was to throw various types of fish into its beak until it tipped the lot out - hopefully not into your bucket.
The client did not have any sketches and so the first stage was to sketch out how the concept may look and use this as a control for establishing the internal arrangement. Once this had been resolved the next stage was to sculpt an actual size model of the toy in foam to confirm the overall size and features for approval by the client. This was approved and the design was developed to a full working prototype which was submitted for play testing.
The original concept was improved during development and the pelican also had flapping feet and lifting eyebrows. The final model was copy tooling standard and designed for open and shut injection moulding.
