Housing From Upcycled Shipping Containers

This project came from an entrepreneur with an idea for housing built from reused shipping containers. Hillside Product Design investigated the practicality of this and prepared a series of product concepts based on creating a modular set of modified containers with pre fitted services which could be configured like building blocks and then cosmetically lined and clad. 

The designs were aimed specifically for countries with poor resources and the exterior designs incorporated large areas of shade and shutters to protect from direct sun and high winds resulting in above standard and affordable local housing. These concepts are currently being developed in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
