The client is a world leader in the field of automated traffic data collection. The brief was to design a 1U height enclosure in collaboration with the clients own electronic and software engineers for a new version of their Motorway Incident Detection and Alert System (MIDAS) in time for a product launch at a Trade show.
This type of equipment gathers real time data about traffic flow which is used to manage traffic and help reduce congestion. As traffic gets denser the need for more sophisticated equipment increases but space in existing cabinets gets tighter as more equipment is used. Space in roadside cabinets is often at a premium and manufacturers are under significant pressure to miniaturise their equipment to prevent costly new cabinets being installed.
The design was developed from sketches into 3D CAD. The parts were manufactured from CAD data and control drawings. The design was prototyped at several stages and underwent an extensive testing programme. The product was launched to the Industry using a seven minute computer generated show reel where the product assembled and rotated to give a three-sixty view all the time being set to music.
