The client is a well-established packaging solutions company. The brief was to test the foil seal for a new product. This required the build of a temperature controlled heat press jig. The jig was used to create the conditions present in a production line for the foil topped heat sealing of liquid filled containers.
To repeatedly create an optimum seal the jig needed to incorporate a method of holding the containers so that they were easy to fit and remove whilst keeping their position under the heating element fixed in place. This was achieved by creating a rapid prototype part. This would have been difficult to make using traditional methods but was quick to turn around as a 3D printed part.
The end result was a jig that could apply the correct heat and pressure for the time duration required to create a repeatable seal. The client was able to utilise this jig to quickly test and identify the suitability of various adhesive backed foils before moving to production quantities.
