The client is a respected marine biologist. The brief was to design a low cost, mass manufactured, user assembled breeding basket for farming Oysters. The client had prepared a schematic of the system and this was based on many years research into marine farming methods and the life cycle of the edible oyster. The client had secured significant funding through various grants and the brief included negotiating and establishing manufacture in China to achieve an economical tooling and unit cost.
The design was developed to a stackable basket half which hinged with itself to create a closed cage. The two halves were retained with a plastic spring clip designed to be easily fitted and removed with a gloved hand. The component designs were issued as CAD data with accompanying 2D control drawings. The tools were reviewed in China during their design and build.
