CLIENT: Toy Manufacturer

INDUSTRY: Toys

Self powered toys have always been highly desirable and attract premium prices in the toy market. The recent success of Robosaur and others are continuations of a genre going back in time to the Ancient Greeks who were clearly obsessed with the notion of creating mechanical 'living beings'. Even Leonardo da Vinci could not resist the challenge and made a walking lion C1500.

The client was a household name in the toy industry. The brief was to design a battery powered mechanical body onto which appendages could be attached. The theme was to be a monster dinosaur and the body had to have a convincing predatory walk. The arms had to slash the air. The head had to scan up and down and the tail wave from side to side. The client had already sculpted the basic model.

The first task was to accurately measure the external shape and determine the internal void. This was followed by developing the mechanism and simultaneously evaluating the power requirements of the battery and the motor.

The client had their own modelmaking facility and it was agreed the project could be split into two. The client would develop the arms, legs, head and tail once they had been supplied with the specification for the connection between those and the body. The mechanism was developed in 2D. Once the mechanism was approved two fully working copy model prototypes were built.
