The client is an established manufacturer of aftermarket vehicle accessories. They had a requirement to create a smaller, low cost version of one of their existing products. The product is a pipe carrier, mounted on the roofs of vans and commercial vehicles and used by tradesmen such as plumbers and electricians to transport long items such as copper pipe or plastic electrical conduit.
The product was based aesthetically on an earlier design and scaled down. It was also to have a door at both ends of the tube, rather than just one at the back as on the large version.
One of the main challenges with this project was to design the product with all the features required by the client and the end user and at the same time bring the manufacturing costs down to a point where it could compete strongly in the market.
Hillside Product Design produced 3D CAD data and prototyped parts using the in-house 3D printer. The client has since launched the product.
